The Car Analogy for Job Fit: A Simple, Powerful Model for Hiring and Development
Just like choosing a high-performance car, selecting or developing the right employee requires evaluating multiple parts—not just one. When you look at all five areas of job fit, you set your people and your organization up for success. Don’t just check the resume—check the whole car.
Three Parts Under the TriMetrix "Hood" These components are not always visible in an interview, but they are essential for performance and are 30% of any hiring decision.
Under the Hood = Personal Skills & Acumen ➤ How they think, solve problems, and apply strengths—this is the engine that drives success.
Gas in the Tank = Motivators ➤ What energizes them. No gas = no go. Motivators reveal whether the role naturally fuels their passion and engagement.
How They Like to Drive = DISC Style & Communication Preferences ➤ How they interact, respond to stress, and show up day to day. DISC shows their natural style and how they'll operate in the seat.
Two Other Critical Parts – Beyond the Assessment These are just vital for job fit as they are 70% of your hiring decision.
Roads Traveled = Experience, Resume, and Future Goals ➤ Where they've been and where they want to go—this ensures they have the experience and that they are match to what the job will require from them, now and in the future.
Where They're Parked = Leader, Team, and Culture Fit ➤ Even a great car performs poorly in the wrong garage. Is the environment right for them to thrive?
Use This Model When Hiring & Developing
- Every person and role is unique. This model helps you identify areas of strong fit and spot potential gaps for coaching or alignment.
- When all five areas are considered: People thrive, using their strengths every day. Organizations thrive, with engaged, high-performing teams.
Don’t just check the resume—check the whole car.
