Episode #86 - Turning Points for Wild Mustangs and Struggling Employees with Leadership, Language and Love

Episode 86 Graphic

Communication extends beyond the ability to give and take direction and work together collaboratively. Sometimes, there are other elements at play that we have to consider when we are experiencing difficulty with struggling employees. And surprisingly, there are many overlaps in the needs of these employees and the taming of wild mustangs.

Overview of Episode #86 ---

  • What it takes to help a wild mustang become a productive member of the herd.
  • Ten things' leaders must do to help a "last chance" employee succeed.
  • Why a company might consider giving a struggling employee another chance.

Wild mustangs are rounded up, tamed, and trained as there are too many mustangs in the wild and not enough land for them to have the habitat they need. As a result, they are trained and put on ranches to become productive members of herds. The stress that this process puts on the animals is intense, and John shares how he gains the trust of these animals and how he breaks down inter-species barriers of communication.

John Garrott is an amazing professional and person, and I love the insight he brings to this topic. Native to Mississippi, he has completed his Master’s of Divinity from Emory and is the founder and executive of The Ridgeline, which is an organization that is devoted to team effectiveness and leadership development. He talks a lot about Turning Point Coaching, sometimes referred to as Last Chance Coaching. He is also certified in PTSD intervention and equine therapy and is a certified trainer of wild Mustangs with the federal government.

The parallels that he outlines between training wild Mustangs and the best way to turn around a struggling employee are impressive and can shift the perspective you might have when you approach a struggling employee. For employees that have great potential but are struggling to perform appropriately, Turning Point Coaching is an amazing tool that can be used to help that employee thrive.

Oftentimes, there are deeper issues that employees are facing that we need to understand and empathize with as leaders to help them achieve their potential and move past their struggles in the workplace. We must listen to them, understand them, and develop trust with these employees so that they feel comfortable enough to flourish – just like wild Mustangs.

This episode is full of insight for you if you are having trouble with struggling employees. Tune in to hear John talk about wild Mustangs and how so many of his training elements can help you with your workforce today!
