Before Trying to "Fix" Employees,

June, 2006

When a frustrated leader asks, “What’s wrong with my team?  Why don’t they care?” -  it could be a sign that he or she is planning to to "fix" someone else, and hopefully correct the problem

Before trying to "fix"  employees, the savvy leader shines the motivation light inward.

Does the leader really want to do what needs to be done?

Is the leader's own lack of connection with the company and the industry communicating a lackluster level of influence and energy to the team?

Studies have determined that people remember less than 35% of what they hear.  Yes, that statistic is accurate - 35%!   But employees never forget how their leader makes them feel.   Far too many managers ignore or don’t realize the level of influence their demeanor has on their team.

If you doubt this, think of the worse manager you ever had, and even if it was 20 years ago, I bet you can very clearly recall how that person made you feel.

Has the leader's  lack of commitment made it okay for the staff to lose their commitment too? Could it be that he isn't as gung-ho on the company line as he once was?

Could the leader be getting in the team’s way?

This doesn't have to happen to you. Capture the energy of the players on your team by raising your own motivation level.

Here are the five key areas you can assess in yourself and change in yourself - from there, the people will take care of themselves.

We suggest that you use the level of influence you have over your team in a positive way. Complete this assessment to measure where you stand in each area.
