Since 1849 Comerica Bank has been a financial services company, headquartered in Detroit with 11, 000 employees and total assets of $53 billion. Comerica is #433 on Fortune 500’s list of largest US companies.
They had a training program already in place, but the company decided to search beyond their current program.
The responsibility for revamping Comerica’s Leadership Development curriculum fell to Gwen Ford, a thirty-year training veteran and Assistant Training Manager at Comerica.
The curriculum would be used by all Comerica leaders, from the Team Leader/Supervisor level to the Senior Executive level.
In the past Comerica’s Leadership Development programs were exclusively with Achieve Global. After extensive research, Comerica expanded their Leadership Development curriculum to include 60 courses, built from:
- Achieve Global's Leadership Development program
- Vital Learning's Leadership Essentials
- Internally developed company-specific programs
The Vital Learning components they selected are:
Leadership Foundation:
- Essential Skills of Leadership
- Essential Skills of Communication
Interpersonal Skills:
- Resolving Conflicts
- Delegating
- Developing Workplace Standards
- Improving Work Habits
- Effective Discipline
- Dealing With Complaints
- Coaching Job Skills
- Performance Assessment
- Supporting Change
- Communicating With Your Manager
Gwen Ford shares her insights:
"We are focused on a back-to-basics effort. The Vital Learning Essential Skills of Leadership Curriculum was the best match...All levels of management have loved it. Even Senior level managers love it. Comments and feed back have been very positive.”
“Positive word of mouth from the [pilot program] participants created the pull we wanted. Divisions were asking for the curriculum based on the positive feedback.
"We like that there are no expensive certifications with the Vital Learning products. Making the switch has been easy. We put the money we were using for certification back into the programs and participant materials.”
